“NOT FAR now.” Brian glanced at the GPS, feeling the rising thrill of anticipation that had Luke jittering in place, bouncing in the passenger seat of the Miata.
“I know, I know! Oh, man….”
At last, the great Bridge loomed in front of them, both a reality and a symbol to Luke, and in some ways his last link to his parents.
Luke and Brian were fed up with traffic jams and car fumes, with fast food and cramped legs, but they were happy, too: happy to be here.
“Got your camera ready?” asked Brian, as he slowly drove onto the bridge. Luke was breathing faster now, excited and scared.
“Yeah. This is it. Oh, man.”
“Start snapping.”
“Oh, man!” He rolled down his window the rest of the way, sounding like he was close to hyperventilating, and raised his camera, taking picture after picture as they rolled along over the bridge, enclosed by cars in front and behind, unable to stop, but capturing every moment of this journey.
“Calm down. Keep breathing.” Brian reached over to squeeze his mate’s thigh. “I’m right here.”
“There!” said Luke with a crack in his voice. “It’s right there! I recognize the view. That’s where they met.” He snapped more pictures, almost craning his body out of the car in his effort to look back, and take another photo, then another. Behind them, a horn honked, then another.
Then abruptly he sat back down, dropping his camera in his lap, and laid his head against the headrest, his eyes shutting, tears squeezing out at the corners. He was breathing fast and shakily now. “I—I—that’s it. That’s the end. All the family— All I have left of them. I did it, and now it’s over and… oh man.” He covered his face with one hand, and wept.
Inwardly, Brian’s wolf howled in anguish. But all he could do was reach over to his wounded mate and try to comfort him with soft touches while still driving as safely as he could over this endless bridge.
The rest of the trip had a muted quality. Luke was subdued but calmer. They didn’t talk much. They stayed as close together as they could. Brian wished he knew some way to comfort Luke, to give him what he needed. But all he could do was be there.
